Penang, nello specifico Georgetown, è la città UNESCO famosa a livello mondiale per la sua incredibile street art. Chi viene in Malesia non può non visitare i suoi tesori. Installazioni e murales si, ma anche templi e quartieri dal carattere ancora fortemente tipico.
Prima di partire avevo fatto i compiti e sapevo cosa cercare a Penang. Conoscevo la sua fama nel mondo della street art. Sapevo già che mi sarebbe piaciuta ma poi esserci fisicamente è un altro conto. Girare per le strade di Georgetown è stata un’esperienza che vorrei ripetere. Tornata ormai da qualche settimana ancora ripenso a come è stato essere lì. Non è stato semplicemente arrivare davanti ad un murales o visitare un tempio, è stato un camminare e vedere, guardare e ascoltare.
CONSIGLI UTILI SU COSA FARE PER RIMANERE STREGATI DA PENANG?
Penang: Isola della Malesia, dove la città principale è Georgetown. E’ la capitale commerciale dell’isola ed è Patrimonio UNESCO dal 2008.
Permanenza? Se vi piace fare con calma due giorni (una notte), se siete di fretta un giorno ve lo dovrete far bastare.
COME VISITARE Georgetown? Il modo migliore per visitarla è a piedi, oppure utilizzando i CAT bus, degli autobus gratuiti che fanno il giro del centro.
CAT BUS: COSA SONO? Il dipartimento del turismo di Penang tratta bene i turisti che visitano l’isola. Uno dei trasporti pubblici più usati è il CAT = Central Area Transit. È un servizio di autobus che non fa pagare al passeggero il tour di George Town. Tutto quello che si deve fare è trovare il cartello “CAT Free Shuttle” sul lato della strada.
Questo autobus è operativo dalle 06:00 alle 12:00.

COSA VEDERE?
Kek Lok Si
È il tempio più importante di Penang. Gode di una posizione panoramica incredibile sulle colline. La sua caratteristica bellezza sta nelle pagode, nei tempietti e nelle statue colorate. Si estende su una superficie molto grande ed è sviluppata su due livelli. In quello superiore c’è un’enorme statua bronzea di 30 metri della dea della misericordia Kuan Yin.
Io ho avuto la fortuna di visitarla durante il periodo del Capodanno Cinese, se potete fatelo anche voi. Il tempio era ancora più bello e si respirava tutta la magia di questo momento magico.
Ingresso al tempio gratuitomentre la funicolare costa RM 4 andata e ritorno.
Per raggiungere il Kek Lok Si dal centro cittàprendere il bus U 201o taxi.
Wat Dhammikarama + Wat Chaiyamangalaram
Il Dhammikarama è uno dei templi più sorprendenti di Penang, poco pubblicizzato e visitato ma sicuramente meritevole di una visita. Un momento di fuga dal resto del mondo, una pace che solo chi lo visita può comprendere.
Il Wat Chaiyamangalaram è posizionato proprio di fronte al Dhammikarama, a circa 3 km dal centro di Georgetown. È famoso per ospitare un’immensa statua del Buddha sdraiato di 33 metri di lunghezza, interamente in oro placcato, che ricorda il Budda del Wat Pho di Bangkok.
Ingresso al tempio gratuitoed è necessario entrare scalzi.
Il modo migliore per arrivarci è prendere un taxi.
LITTLE INDIA + CAMPBELL STREET + STREETFOOD
Mercati con ottimi prezzi, tanto colore e la musica di Bollywwod. E’ qui che va provato lo streetfood.

- char kway teow : noodles di riso piatti saltati con verdure e carne)
- laksa: zuppa di noodles piccante con gamberi e mille altri ingredienti)
- dolci– kue dadar kulung: un cilindro di pancake di pandan e cocco ripieno di zucchero – coconut ice cream che vendono le bancarelle a Penang: servito in metà noce di cocco con gelato al cocco, cubetti di gelatina di cocco e altri ingredienti che si possono scegliere sul posto.
STREET ART
Camminando per il centro di George Town incontrerete un numero imprecisato di murales e installazioni artistiche. I graffiti che colorano la città si trovano un po’ ovunque. La zona in cui si concentrano quelli più fotografati è tra Lebuh Armenian e Lebuh Chulia. I più famosi sono quelli dell’artista lituano Ernest Zacharevic che ha realizzato una serie di murales combinati ad installazioni ispirandosi alla vita di tutti giorni dei malesi e usando le persone normali come modelli.
RISTORANTINO SUPER CARINO: CHINA HOUSE. Io ho mangiato qui, cibo buono e ambiente super super. Tovaglie dove disegnare, muri pieni di graffiti e libri, un giardino interno da sogno.
COSE CHE NON SONO RIUSCITA A VEDERE MA AVREI VOLUTO
CLAN JETTY
Nella zona di Weld Quay. I Clan Jetty sono un insieme di tipiche case su palafitte nell’antico porticciolo. Qua vivono le famiglie dei clan cinesi arrivati a Penang nel secolo scorso e ci sono piccole botteghe di souvenir. Per proteggerle dalla distruzione per fare spazio a costruzioni avveniristiche è inervenuta l’UNESCO.
RAINBOW SKYWALK AND OBSERVATORY DECK
Il Rainbow Skywalk and Observatory Deck offre una vista a volo d’uccello di tutta Penang. E’ nel punto più alto di George Town, sul tetto della torre Komtar. L’esperienza è quella di camminare in aria a 249 m di altezza. L’Osservatorio al 65esimo piano dispone anche di una passerella di vetro che consente di guardare tutto quello che avviene di sotto.

Penang, specifically Georgetown, is the UNESCO city famous worldwide for its incredible street art. Those who come to Malaysia can not fail to visit its treasures. Installations and murals, but also temples and districts with a strongly typical character.
Before leaving, I had done my homework and I knew what to look for in Penang. I knew his fame in the world of street art. I already knew that I would like it but then being physically there is another account. Walking through the streets of Georgetown was an experience that I would like to repeat. Back now for a few weeks I still think back to how it was being there. It was not just to get in front of a mural or visit a temple, it was a walk and see, watch and listen.
USEFUL ADVICE ON WHAT TO DO TO STAY IN PENANG?
Penang: Island of Malaysia, where the main city is Georgetown. It is the commercial capital of the island and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
Stay? If you like to take a calm two days (one night), if you are in a hurry one day you will have to do it enough.
HOW TO VISIT Georgetown? The best way to visit is on foot, or using the CAT buses, free buses that go around the center.
CAT BUS: WHAT IT IS? The Penang tourism department treats tourists who visit the island well. One of the most used public transport is the CAT = Central Area Transit. It is a bus service that does not charge the passenger for the George Town tour. All you have to do is find the “CAT Free Shuttle” sign on the side of the road.
This bus works from 06:00 to 12:00.

WHAT SEE?
Kek Lok Si
It is the most important temple in Penang. It enjoys an incredible panoramic position on the hills. Its characteristic beauty lies in pagodas, temples and colored statues. It extends over a very large area and is developed on two levels. In the upper one there is a huge 30-meter bronze statue of the goddess of mercy Kuan Yin.
I was lucky enough to visit it during the Chinese New Year period, if you can do it too. The temple was even more beautiful and you could breathe all the magic of this magical moment.
Free entrance to the temple while the funicular costs RM 4 return.
To reach the Kek Lok Si from the city center take the bus U 201 or taxi.
Wat Dhammikarama + Wat Chaiyamangalaram
The Dhammikarama is one of the most amazing temples of Penang, little publicized and visited but certainly worthy of a visit. A moment of escape from the rest of the world, a peace that only those who visit it can understand.
Wat Chaiyamangalaram is located just across the Dhammikarama, about 3 km from the center of Georgetown. It is famous for hosting an immense statue of the 33-meter-long reclining Buddha, entirely in gold-plated, reminiscent of Bangkok’s Wat Pho Buddha.
Free entrance to the temple and it is necessary to enter barefoot. The best way to get there is to take a taxi.
LITTLE INDIA + CAMPBELL STREET + STREETFOOD
Markets with excellent prices, lots of color and the music of Bollywwod. It is here that streetfood must be tried.
TIPS?
- char kway teow: rice noodles sautéed with vegetables and meat)
- laksa: spicy noodles soup with shrimp and a thousand other ingredients)
- kue dadar kulung: a cylinder of pandan and coconut pancakes filled with sugar – coconut ice cream that sells stalls in Penang: served in half coconut with coconut ice cream, cubes of coconut jelly and other ingredients that can be choose on the spot.
STREET ART
Walking through the center of Georgetown you will encounter an unknown number of murals and artistic installations. The graffiti that color the city can be found almost everywhere. The area in which the most photographed ones are concentrated is between Lebuh Armenian and Lebuh Chulia. The most famous are those of the Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic who has made a series of murals combined with installations inspired by the everyday life of Malaysians and using normal people as models.
SUPER CUTE RESTAURANT: CHINA HOUSE. I ate here, good food and super super environment. Tablecloths where to draw, walls full of graffiti and books, a dreamy interior garden.
THINGS THAT WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL TO SEE, BUT I WANTED
CLAN JETTY
In the Weld Quay area. The Jetty Clans are a collection of typical houses on stilts in the old port. Here live the families of Chinese clans arrived in Penang in the last century and there are small souvenir shops. UNESCO is in order to protect them from destruction to make room for futuristic constructions.
RAINBOW SKYWALK AND OBSERVATORY DECK
The Rainbow Skywalk and Observatory Deck offers a bird’s eye view of all of Penang. It is at the highest point of George Town, on the roof of the Komtar tower. The experience is to walk in the air at 249 m in height. The Observatory on the 65th floor also features a glass walkway that allows you to watch everything that takes place below.
